repetition by Unwound

‘Repetition’, if we were to go by the name, is applicable here because of how willing the band was to expand their horizons with every new release. Going from their lo-fi debut to crushing post-rock tinted noise and now to here, where for the first time it sounds like Unwound have completely endorsed the sound we today confidently label “post-hardcore.”

Even though it is still characteristically noisy throughout, there’s an overarching sense of fluidity carrying what would else be purely destructive collections of dominating bass and drums. It should come as little surprise then that this kind of fluidity would soon be (no pun intended) repeated in the near future of rising post-hardcore bands. It’s also here that the genre of emo can trace back much of its origin to.

So while ‘Repetition’ isn’t as electric as its later contemporaries or as some of Unwound’s other profound work, I still hold out a great deal of respect for both its legacy and its several highlights on this tracklist.

Unwound deserves to be immortalized as a legacy act for a reason.
